About me

Raised between The Town (Oakland) and The City (San Francisco), Katherin Canton envisions an arts-centered healthy city to call home. Earning a Bachelors of Fine Arts with highest distinctions from California College of the Arts (San Francisco/Oakland) she explored community arts through a studio practice in photography and textiles. Putting theory to practice during her stay at CCA, Katherin took the reigns as the administrative and community collaborations coordinator at the volunteer-run arts center Rock Paper Scissors Collective. Developing her teaching practice and community engagement in the arts, Katherin has also worked in youth development as a teaching artist with Out of Site  and Southern Exposure's Mission Voices summer program as an artist assistant. Currently she is a Board member with KONO CBD, Oakland; an advisory Board member with SolidariTea, and the Network Coordinator with Emerging Arts Professionals SF/BA.

As a community artist, Katherin intersects community participation, audience engagement, and urban poverty/issues awareness. These social context come through the form of 3D photo transfers and puzzles. Facilitating creative based inquiry by presenting urban development statistics/stories and images of healthy communities, she offers scenarios for audiences to play and imagine a new, ecologically/economically diverse, and vibrant urban life.

PAST LIFE
